At that day, all activities should be paused, airport closed, electricy must be shut down, we will be in total darkness, and no one allowed to go out, no TV, no sound, no un necessary lights.

No one allowed to go out .. That mean no POLLUTION !! hurrayyyy …
this is the most day i loved in entire year, i can enjoy a day without any sound pollutions of motors, only natural sky lights, no sonic boom of an airplane, it will be awesome.

For some people its a torture, they are panic to arrange a short getaway trip out of the island for the entire Nyepi day ( silent day) but not me, i loved to enjoy every darkness, every silence, every unpolluted air i breath. why would i left bali for the most extraordinary event that can only be happened in bali? One day wont hurt without any modern life business, just me and my lovely family, playing with kid all day, teach my kid to thank what a modern world can give us and what a modern world harm us.

Its a no pollution day. its a family day in silence of modern world.

i wish if every region or district or country all over the globe can do this for one day, how many coals use in power plan  that polluted our world we can reduce, how many nuclear waste we can reduce, how many petrol and fuel we save that day.

The Nyepi day should teach us to value the limited energy resources we had left, to teach us for being grateful for what God’s gifts to us to maintain our energy-waste modern world life style. The global warming will not come this soon  if we have the awareness of using our energy as much as we need and as efficient as we can, not using it as much as we can.

we at Indonesia, can’t use as much as energy as we want, not because its not provided, we always count every single cent to pay the energy bill, we dont drive big monster car that other country drive since hundreds years ago, just because most of us SIMPLY CANT AFFORD IT !! We dont much thrash goods or electronic that broken before  try to repair it, its simply because most of us cant afford it !

what if the citizen of the world, despite they have  buying ability, do the same, repair it before throwing it, use energy as we need enough, use energy saver car and transportation, being humble and simple. less energy bill less world pollution problems we had.

Use energy as much as you need, not as much as you greed,
we dont own the furture world by our self,
our kids will inherit the pollutions and problems we left behind.

We went out this morning with mr Garry & Ian.
meet them at their villas this morning 7:30 at seminyak, the high tide will be at 11:00 am, so today we may have been lucky getting some fish.

Driving to the jetty for about 20 minutes, then check all gears, all aboard, and we cruised to the spot at 28-32 knots speed on our game fishing boat powered by twin 200HP yamaha engine.

the current is fast !! top current drifted our boat to trhe speed of 4.9 knots when we arrive, man !! this may not fishable yet !! we keep trying though. First and second bite only cut our line, we think its a barracuda and the dogtooth.

The first run, ain’t got any bite, we headed back to the Ruby snapper fishing spots, we know they are there !! fish can run but they will not bear temptation of our lures !!

after 15 minutes exercise on our floating gym, the first fish up. NOT A GAME FISH, it weight less than our 500 grams metal jig lure !! Garry land it and release it to fish another day. wise !!

We make turn to the spots again, this time captain John ( that is me ) has marked where the current drifting the boat.
Captain John signal everyone, ok start fishing. Capt John confidence that it will has stikes now, the current has down to 2,9 – 3,2 knots, then he yelled, on the spots now …

125 meters deep,  then 101 meters then strike !!!
Garry on it !! fish on !! fish on !! this run very strong and fast, i thought it was what we looking for, the mighty dogttoth tuna !! it was NOT ! hahahaa ahahhaa … it might be a ruby snapper – that beatiful fish.

then,
not even 2 minutes, second strike, now Ian on it !! this fish pulled our 80 pounds line hard, super confidencely both anglers fighting the fishes.

Then first one landed, a nice ruby at around 9 kilos in weight. the 2nd come up that Ian brought up, its the biggest ruby snapper the last 2 months, or i say this 2010 year. a nice good eating 14-15 kilos ruby snapper !! salute !!

The first one that Garry landed hooked at the eyes, so it was harder to land and fight more stronger.

Both fishes landed, both anglers exhausted

so then after a short break, we make another run, soon after we start jigging at 100 meters, Ian is the lucky person, alnding a nice 11.5 kilos ruby snapper, the 2nd he landed within an hour.
Now, its time for BINTANG beers celebration ) a short break with Bintang beer,
Garry asked me,” Are we going to fish again or we headed back” i was surprised, this gentlemen understand the meaning of enough ( i salute you Sir Garry & Sir Ian).

I looked at the watch, it still early, we have plenty time to fish, the i decided, “lets do one more run and cruise back ”

we make another run then try to fish for 10 minutes, then we all headed back, arriving at the jetty even before 12 noon. so early. we cleaned up the ruby snapper, as both gentlemen anglers only want to bring one, because its enough to BBQ tonight – i insist them to bring the biggest or all of them, because de facto and de jure those are theirs.

Then after a bit ‘negotiation’, they finally agree to bring the medium one because it will be enough for all at the villa that they will have party toinight ( i salute you two gentlemen once again).

Today’s is the biggest ruby on jigging this year that our client got, its a good karma for good hearts anglers!
They deserved it. Not many asked us to return early because has enough catches. My respect to these gentlemen.

I look forward to have another opportunity to go out fishing with you guys again. This is a great and fun day.

Left aboutr 8:30 morning from, the port and rushed to the ruby snappers’ home. All lure down and in about 10 minutes, bite on, Fish on !! Mr. Yves is the one was fight the fish, not even 10 minutes the fish landed, a nice 9 kilos ruby snappers.

Mr Yves and us  had several bite that un hooked properly, missed calls we name it. then the current getting strong, our 500grams jig cant reach the bottom so then we moved in between spots, there is only one Dogtooth tuna bite that cut the line off. then No more bite. we return to port at 13:00

WHy marine radio?
Though we always have our Cellphone in our pocket, if in any emergencvy situation, even though you have a signal in the middle of water, WHO YOU GONNA CALL ??
Yes the number 112 is for police emergency call, 115 from your cell phone will call SAR team ON LAND !! none on waters or none the next vessel next to us.

Marine radio has the most important channel , ITIS  THE EMERGENCY CHANNEL 16, its the emergency distress channel, and its usually set to high power transmission, or at some radio that has dual watch, it will scan other channel and CHANNEL 16.

Each Channel is assigned  a different purpose. Most are restricted for commercial and governmental use. Channels 68, 69, 71 ,72 and 78A are the noncommercial working channels in the U.S

BUt lets talk about EMERGENCY DISTRESS CALL PROCEDURE.

You may only have seconds to send a distress call. Here’s what you do. Transmit, in this order:

1. If you have an HF radiotelephone tuned to 2182 kHz, send the radiotelephone alarm signal if one is available. If you have a VHF marine radio, tune it to channel 16. Unless you know you are outside VHF range of shore and ships, call on channel 16 first.
2. Distress signal “MAYDAY”, spoken three times.
3. The words “THIS IS”, spoken once.
4. Name of vessel in distress (spoken three times) and call sign or boat registration number, spoken once.
5. Repeat “MAYDAY” and name of vessel, spoken once.
6. Give position of vessel by latitude or longitude or by bearing (true or magnetic, state which) and distance to a well-know landmark such as a navigational aid or small island, or in any terms which will assist a responding station in locating the vessel in distress. Include any information on vessel movement such as course, speed and destination.
7. Nature of distress (sinking, fire etc.).
8. Kind of assistance desired.
9. Number of persons onboard.
10. Any other information which might facilitate rescue, such as length or tonnage of vessel, number of persons needing medical attention, color hull, cabin, masks, etc.
11. The word “OVER”

Stay by the radio if possible. Even after the message has been received, the Coast Guard can find you more quickly if you can transmit a signal on which a rescue boat or aircraft can home in.

MAKE SURE WHEN YOU DO ABOVE STEPS, THE RADIO IS AT CHANNEL 16, and every radio has button with number ‘16/9′ written on the channel button, it will sweap in between any channel to channel 16 and return, make sure its on channel 16, because all vessel and port authorithy are always monitoring channel 16.

Channel 9 is also use for calling/hailing other vessel nearby, however channel 16 is for emergency only.

Channel list, freq, use.

With todays waterproof and compact VHF handheld radios it is possible and practical as well as affordable to carry a VHF radio while kayaking. These little broadcast and receiving units have short ranges with line of sight communications, but they can still be useful for organizing groups paddles while on the water, talking with other boats in the area and seeking help in emergency situations.There is more to using a radio than just buying it and learning the functions of the knobs. You have to know a few of the rules and courtesies that make clear and accurate communication on the shared frequencies of radio possible. First of all, unlike a telephone, you can not talk and hear at the same time. Wired telephones have two sets of wires – one pair for hearing and one pair for talking. Wireless telephones have two frequencies, each one dedicated to the separate functions. But radios operate on only one frequency, called a channel, at a time. The talking goes out on one frequency and the hearing comes in on the same frequency. Radios must use a lot of power to transmit their signal in all directions for a great distance. When listening, they are picking up a weak signal transmitted from another radio far away. There can be thousands of times more power in the signal going out than in the signal coming in. In fact, the outgoing signal can be powerful enough to fry the electronics listening for the weak incoming signal. Most radios avoid this by using a button that turns off the listening when talking. So to use a radio you must press a button, talk, release the button and then listen for the reply. If you forget to press the button before talking the other fellow won’t hear you because your radio never transmitted anything. If you forget to let go of the button when you finish talking, you won’t hear the other fellow reply to you. If you talk when the other person is talking neither of you will hear the other one. So this one sidedness of the radio creates the need for some coordination between the talker and the listener. The listener needs to know when the other person is done talking and is now ready to listen. For efficient use of the radio the talker should say OVER when he has finished talking and is going back to listen mode. Now the listener can be the talker. Cooperation between the two participants in the conversation will make the entire conversation go much smoother without pauses of dead air or one talking over the other one and not listening , with all the resulting confusion and wasted time and repeated conversations that improper radio etiquette will bring about. When one is done talking and done listening one says OUT. At this point it is expected that the radio will be turned to another channel or turned off. OVER – I am done talking and I am waiting to hear your reply. OUT – I am done talking and I am not going to listen to your reply. So why would anybody ever say OVER AND OUT, which means I am done talking to you and I am waiting for your reply AND I am not listening for your reply, in fact I probably changed channels or turned off the radio. Using OVER AND OUT immediately identifies you as a radio dufus. In addition to these two very common words of radio lingo there are several others. ROGER – Yes MAYDAY – In imminent danger of loss of life or property. PAN PAN – pronounced pon pon – Difficult situation with possible injury or loss of property but not immediate SECURITE SECURITE – dangerous situation, general navigation information between ships. In addition to these words, in order to receive the correct letters when transmitting a series of letters, there has been established a series of code words representing all the letters of the alphabet. Use of these distinctly different words instead of the letters themselves helps the listener to correctly receive the letters some of which sound so much alike that they can be misunderstood over a radio. The letter S and the letter F are two in particular that are easily confused when spoken over a low or static filled signal. They have been assigned the words Sierra for S and Foxtrot for F. One is not likely to mistake Sierra for Foxtrot. Here is the list of code words for the alphabet: A ………. ALPHA N ………. NOVEMBER B ………. BRAVO O ………. OSCAR C ………. CHARLIE P ………. PAPA D ………. DELTA Q ………. Radio traffic is monitored by all boats with radios on and by the Coast Guard on Channel 16. This is known as the distress frequency. Its purpose is a place for all parties to listen in and see if anyone is in need of assistance. It can also be used as a hailing frequency to see if any one is trying to talk to you. But Channel 9 is the channel that is meant for non emergency hailing purposes. In order to keep these channels open for new conversations to be started, particularly for emergency situations, its is required to switch to another channel once contact between the parties has been made. Continuing to chatter on channel 16 will get you some angry responses for your rude, inconsiderate use of the hailing frequency. The parties starting the new conversation agree to go to a new channel called the working channel. Both switch their radios to the new channel and listen to see if the channel is clear. If there is a conversation on the chosen channel, both parties go back to the hailing channel to select a new working channel. Breaking in on an ongoing channel conversation is very rude and very inefficient. Each channel is assigned a different purpose. Most are restricted for commercial and governmental use. OVER Perhaps this is best illustrated by a number of examples of different types of calls. For a situation with imminent threat to life – a call to any radio operator listening. MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY This is sailing vessel Deep Six again sailing vessel Deep Six I say again sailing vessel Deep Six Whisky Xray Tango seven five niner one Five miles northeast of Saboni Point, Delaware River. Taking on water rapidly and sinking. 35 foot sloop white hull, light blue cabintop. Five people aboard. No life raft. No survival suits. Requesting immediate assistance. OVER Listen for 15 seconds and then repeat. MAYDAY calls are serious business. Issuing a MAYDAY call for something not immediately threatening loss of life, serious injury or loss of property is subject to a $10,000.00 fine. Just because you are going to miss your airplane flight because you ran aground is NOT a valid reason to issue a MAYDAY call. If you hear a MAYDAY call do not talk on this channel. Let the Coast Guard handle the call. Write down any information that the caller gives out. The Coast Guard radios are powerful and probably reach further, louder and clearer than yours does. Only if the Coast Guard requests assistance of nearby vessels or the Coast Guard does not answer after three minutes and repeated MAYDAY calls should you respond yourself. If the Coast Guard does not respond to the distress call you should assume that the Coast Guard is unable to hear the MAYDAY call. You should then perform a MAYDAY relay, repeating the information given in the original call following the proper format but using the term MAYDAY RELAY instead of MAYDAY and using your vessel name and call sign. If you are in a position to render assistance to the stricken vessel, wait until the traffic between the vessel and the Coast Guard subsides and then offer that assistance to the Coast Guard, not the stricken vessel operator and coordinate the rescue effort with the Coast Guard. For a situation with possible loss of life or property but not imminently. PON PON PON PON PON PON This is motor vessel No Way KILO VICTOR ALPHA four eight niner two. Ten miles west of Smith Point. 30 foot Hunter Marine light grey hull. Two peopple onboard. Engine flooded from controlled hull leak. Drifting toward shore. All traffic this area be advised a group of nine kayaks is crossing the channel in heavy fog. OVER. A call to the Coast Guard on Channel 16 might go like this. Coast Guard, Coast Guard, Coast Guard. This is kayak Mariner Express, Two miles south east of Smith Island latitude 34.0783 North longitude 75.8456 West. We have separated from a member of our group in high seas and are unable to locate him. Several other members of the group have capsized multiple times due to severe sea sickness. Requesting assistance. OVER Kayak Mariner Express, This is Coast Guard Station Chesapeake City. Go to Channel 23 Over Kayak Mariner Express going 23. Over. Coast Guard this is kayak Mariner Express on 23. Over. (When switching channels the initiating party speaks first.) Kayak Mariner Express, this is Coast Guard Station Chesapeake City on 23. Please restate your situation. Over. Kayak Mariner Express requests assistance to locate …….. Blah Blah Blah ……………….. Don’t call the Coast Guard for stupid stuff. They are there to protect life and property, not your convenience or comfort. Calling the Coast Guard about running aground, or running out of gas, or being becalmed will get you in trouble. There are many private and commercial organizations whose business and pleasure it is to help you out with these types of problems. Sea Tow is the major organization in the U.S. that does this and they monitor channel 16 too. A routine call on a handheld VHF with no license using channel 9 might go like this. Kayak Looksha, Kayak Looksha, Kayak Looksha this is Kayak Mariner Express. Over. Kayak Mariner Express this is Kayak Looksha. Go to 69. Over. Mariner Express going 69. Over (Listen On Channel 69. Some VHFs have the ability to monitor/scan more than one channel.) Marine radios can also be used to connect to land telephones through the marine operator. This is an expensive and often comical operation as the telephone user seldom understands the requirements of the radio conversation and will talk when you are talking and not realize why you can’t hear what they said. This option is extremely expensive and should only be used if its really really important. Use a cell phone if at all possible. Radios are not toys and are meant for the serious business of safe navigation and emergency rescues. Never let your children play with a radio. Teach them the proper respect and protocol. Remember that the life they save may be yours. Finally remember that what you say on a radio can be heard by anyone within range, so speak as if you were speaking to your mama. Foul language is cause for revoking your license and is subject to fines and even imprisonment by the regulating authorities. The Coast Guard monitors and can locate the source of radio signals. Its part of their job.

so then we picked him up at lembongan island at 7:30 then headed for fishing spots right away.

i feel today will not be so much early as two days ago, it turn to be not true, after two times of playing jig, we had a double strike !!

both rods were bent trying to hold the heavy load into its structure, the first one landed minutes later by mr. Kurt, its a 13 kilos ruby snapper. then the 2nd one landed few minutes later, its a nine kilos of ruby snapper.

after a short break (and beer), we did some more jigging, another 30 minutes past, no bite, then one bite at the front deck, fight a bit, then lost !!!

we decided to troll chin-weighted balyhoo for a while, waiting the bottom current to be calmer, few roounds no bite, we then going for the other jigging spot, a 570 grams red back and white belly was lowered, 1 time, no bite, 2nd time, a monster seems pulling the line so quick on the stella reel. judge from the way its run, its gotta be dogtoot !!

Kurt fought the fish, pumping and reel in the 65 lbs tuffline xp into the 10.000 size spool, the spool has spill 200+ meters, unstoppable, jigwrex rods bent and keep bent redistribute the load to its backbone, then…

the power that pulling the line out stop and rod back straight, ouch !! lost the dogtooth tuna … !!

we tried again jigging for an hour, no bite so then we decided to head back.

total today 2 ruby snappers, not bad for a 4 hours fishing. The bottom current was very strong that at the end of the trip, 570 grams metal jig did not reach the bottom, drifted away by the current, the sufrface current were average of 1.2 – 2.4 – 3 knots.

Bali Jigging for Ruby snapper, February2010

As mr Kurt instructed to pick up at lembongan island at the villa, we leaving the port as early as possible, arriving at lembongan island at the beach and we manage to pickup these gentlemen in front of their staying villa. So they were just walk down the steps to the water and  into our boat.

all aboard, then we cruise to the fishing spots at 30 knots speed, faster we reach the spots that mean more time for jigging.

around 20 minutes later we arrived at the first spot. All gear was set before we left port and we double check the knots, swivels, split rings, hooks connection, jig assist, all are OK, we are good to jig !!

All good to go, we are OK to jig !!

both lowered down to the seabed at around 105 meters as readt on the sounder screen, start playing the 500 grams lure, not even 5 minutes, and the first bite happened.

Ken is the first lucky fisherman onboard, start reel in the braid line and in 3 minutes, the medium ruby snapper surfaced.

few minutes later, after the photo session we start fishing again, this time in between 98 meters to 115 meters depth.  now seems the Kurt tuirn for fighting the fish, he was on stella 10.000SW reel and shimano jigwrex rods, seems easy with not much struggle to fisht the fish. this one seems bigger snapper, when fish shown under the water  seems like a 10 kilos ruby snapper, it is 11 kilos one. Great catch !!

without not many  wait, they start jigging again, now again Kurt has the bite, the rod bent only slightly, Kurt reel directly from the reel without pumping the rod. seems easy. we cant guest what fish it will be, we only know its a small one.

The fish surfaced,  turn to be a tiny coral trout – a 200 grams fish bite a 500 grams jig !!

then we decided to trolling time for take rest and waiting the current and tide to be perfect. few troll round the rock, the bite aint happened. then last hour we decided to jig again.

this time is not as easy as early morning, the current has changed direction, sometimes we had to start to repositioning the boat and the lure. but all the hard works paid !!

Kurt got another bite !! a big one , bigger than before, rod and the stella reel now is screaminggg, running the line. Kurt start to fight back, slowly but sure and some back pain were happened.

“It’s a Johny’s Gym’ you got fish and tanned skin and exercise in a same price !!”

but Kurt still fighting the fish, when surfaced, we see a big ruby snapper around 13 kilos that was bite kurt’s metal jig lure.

Then he headed back to lembongan with 3 ruby snappers, 1 tiny coral trout and a lot of fun.

the weather was cloudly and less wind. the sea seems calm and current are moderate.

We quickly arrived at our first spot, lowering down our 500 grams jig and start doing the jerk motion to play the jig. Less than 10 minutes, we had our first strike !!!

It was a dogtooth tuna that seems biting our jig. the spool drag tightened on 10 kilos drag, still spilled of our braided line, after a short run, took away about 100 meters of our line, the line was broke without us able to fight the fish, jut hold the rods. 1-0 for the fish.

sometimes later we had our 2nd strike, still dogtooth tuna at the end of the line, and line break again. then we decided to troll because the current is start to get strong, we lowered 500 grams jig still cant reach the bottom.

We troll around the atol, and wash, first strike, a double strike, the port side suddenly loss its line tension, the starboard tiagra reel still spilled off the line. we cleared others reels, and start fightting the fish, its a GT on the end of the line.

after landing the fish,

we  had anorther round for trollinga s we predict the current will be slower in about 30 minutes, then we had another bite, the reels screamminggg … then stop …, man !! missed this strike …. !!

We moved to another jigging spots, the upper current are about 4 knots, we were drifted away from the point, then we decided to moved back, reeled in all the line, half way up, a strike, this one hooked up perfectly !!

would it be another dogtooth tuna?
After the short run, we managed to reel our braid line into the reel, half way up, the fish did not run as strong as before… it must be amberjack or ruby snapper, several minutes later the fish surfaced, its a nice size of RUBY SNAPPER.

this is a 12 kilos good eat !!!
we bring the snapper aboard put it in the cool box and head back home. not bad for a 2 hours fishing !!! or may be we were lucky that day.

Mahi – mahi are biting now .

Update: January 07 2010.
the mahi mahi has grown to average 8 to 12 kilos by yesterday we were fishing. video above was last week fishing that is still average 5 kilos

It’s ON when It’s On !!

Mahi mahi/dorado/dolphin fish is one of the game fish that will jump to the air during the fisght, offers spectacular views and experience for them who hasnt fish for dorado.

Dorado fishing is seasonal, in Bali is at October to the latest at march the following years/ We have surveyed the location and the dorado is ON !!

Join us on the traditional canoe boat with 2 balancer outriggers as shown on the video,  on the very calm weather, and lots of strikes. As per today the average caught is 8 kilos in weight and the biggest is 15 kilos.

We will pick you up at the early morning at 4am and 3 hours drive to destination. we staret fishing immediately and finished right on lunch time. driving back to your hotel and arriving at hotel around 5-6pm.

Include the wooden boat charter, air conditioned transportation during tours, waters, snack, use of our fishing gear, hooks and baits,guide. Lunch before return to denpasar pay by yourself, breakfast morning not include.

Today we have just return from our survey location for dorado/mahi mahi.
We have a good news that the dorado are biting now, we have a very good result this last sunday – 11 oct09.

The average catches are 10 fishes a day average size from a juvenile 2-3 kilos each to a big one 15kilos.
We are so satisfy for this week survey result.

The drive from Denpasar/Kuta/Sanur is 3 hours, we suggest a sleep over at the hotel in the area, leaving afternoon/evening and return the next day evening to denpasar/nusa dua/seminyak/kuta.

The boat we will use traditional boats, the use of  gear are inclusive in the service price, we can also arrange for our guest to have a beach dives (on request) in the surrounding area.
